I work from photographs but they must be of superior quality. Outdoor photos are usually the best as they employ natural light. Studio lighting often projects lights from various angles which blanch out the subject, erasing the shadows and value changes needed for a successful painting. Personally, I can't tell you how many times I've thought of a picture of a favorite pet and dug out the old photo albums so I can get it out to paint. Those old pictures are almost never good enough. I tend to look at those pictures with my heart instead of my eyes, and it hurts to realize my picture doesn't really portray my pet's features well enough for me to recreate them, and my memory is definitely not any sharper.
When photographing your pets, get down on the same level as them and take pictures with tight close-ups. If I can use your picture I will be glad to. If I need to do the photography, and you live in my area, there is an additional $50 charge for up to 1 hour of time.
My paintings are usually no smaller than 12" x 18" and can be as large as 20" x 30". They must be framed under glass and need to be matted or have spacers inserted between the picture and the glass.
Pricing starts at $200 for a single animal portrait.
I need 2-3 weeks to complete a portrait as I like to take my time and produce the best image of your pet and their personality. We love our animals and I want you to love your animal's portrait.
If you have a photo you'd like me to consider just email it to me and I'll be glad to look at it and get back to you.
